The Tests She Gives You That You Don't Even Know You're Failing
There are moments in every relationship when a man is being tested.
Not necessarily because his woman has consciously decided to test him.
She may not be thinking, “Let's see if he can handle this.”
She may not even realize what is happening.
But something inside her is asking these types of questions…
“Can I trust this man to remain grounded when life becomes unpredictable?”
“Can he stay connected to himself when she is upset?”
“Can he remain clear when she changes her mind?”
“Can he listen to her frustration without immediately becoming defensive?”
“Can he stand in his truth without needing to overpower her?”
“Can he remain present when her emotions begin to move?”
Many men fail these tests without ever realizing they are being tested.
They think she is just being difficult or being controlling.
So they try to convince her, fix her, or shut her down.
Or they just withrdrawal completely.
And sadly for many of the men I work with, they often demonstrate exactly what she is afraid of.
They become reactive, defensive, aggressive, or disconnected and emotionally unavailable.
The question to ask is not whether your woman will challenge you.
She will.
The question I like to ask myself is, “Who am I when she does challenge me?”
The Feminine Is Movement & Flow
Something important to understand about masculine and feminine polarity is that the feminine is often experienced as movement and flow while the masculine is stillness and structure.
The feminine may want one thing in the morning and something different in the evening.
She may feel deeply connected to you one moment and uncertain the next.
She may be excited about a plan and then suddenly question whether she wants to do it.
She may express frustration, change her mind, become emotional, challenge your decision, or bring up something that you thought was already resolved.
This does not necessarily mean that she is irrational or manipulative.
And it also doesn’t mean that a man should simply tolerate disrespect or abandon his own boundaries.
It means that relationships involve movement and flow.
All great relationships have enough groundedness in the relationship to hold that movement.
A river can move because the riverbed provides structure.
The ocean can move because the shoreline gives it shape.
The leaves of a tree sway in the wind while the truck stays grounded.
In the same way, a woman can feel safe to experience her emotional movement when she knows that her man will stay rooted and firm.
This is one of the deepest responsibilities of masculine presence.
Not to control, stop, or become lost in her movement, but to remain grounded enough that her movement does not immediately become your movement.
The First Test: Complaining
She comes home and complains about the kids, work, the house, or something you didn’t do last week.
You feel attacked and defend yourself…
"But I did take care of that."
"Why are you always complaining?"
"Nothing I do is ever good enough for you."
"You're the one who wanted this."
The conversation escalates and now she is more upset.
Which makes you more defensive.
You both end up feeling unseen, unheard, and misunderstood.
Your woman didn’t come home and complain so that you would solve her problem.
She wanted to release some stress in the comfort of your grounded presence.
She just wanted you to listen with feeling like the victim.
What you could say in these types of situations is simply, “I hear that you're frustrated."
And then just listen to her with the intent to understand before every saying anything.
Listening does not mean agreeing with everything and surrendering your boundaries.
She just wants to be heard.
The Second Test: She Challenges You
You make a decision and she questions it.
You say you want to go somewhere and she says she wants to stay home.
You create a plan and she suggests changing it.
You express an opinion and she disagrees without even hearing you out.
Many of us experience this as a threat to our masculinity.
We falsely believe that if she disagrees with us, we will lose authority.
So we become more forceful (or retreat entirely).
Disagreement does not automatically mean that you have lost your leadership.
A man who is grounded in his purpose does not need everyone around him to agree with him in order to remain clear.
He can listen to another perspective without immediately abandoning his own.
He can say:
"I hear what you're saying. I've considered it, and I still believe this is the direction I want to take."
Or…
"That's a great perspective. Let me think about it."
A man who cannot tolerate being challenged is fragile.
True strength does not require you to win any conversation.
It requires you to remain connected to yourself while another person has a different viewpoint or perspective.
The Third Test: She Changes Her Mind
This one can be especially difficult for me.
I like to plan out my days the night before.
My wife is a perpetual mind changer.
Early in our relationship, this would drive me bonkers.
Until I learned to stay grounded.
I used to get mad and say things like, "But we already decided this!"
Which from my logical mind seems completely understandable.
But to her, she just wasn’t feeling it anymore.
So we talked about things like commitment and the efficiency of planning.
And I learned that my wife lives more in the present and doesn’t like obligations to perform things she’s not feeling.
So I learned how to remain grounded when she wants to change plans.
This doesn’t mean that I fold and give in to her when she changes her mind.
By staying grounded and not reactive, I can see her perspective and either decide to stick to the plan or make the change she is suggesting.
Either way, when there is clear, calm communication, I pass the test and create more safety for my wife.
The Fourth Test: She Doubts You
Maybe she questions your decision or your direction.
She wonders whether your business idea will work.
She might ask, “Are you sure this is what you want?"
Some men immediately become defensive because they need her approval and her questioning seems more like a suggestion.
So many men need her validation before moving forward and this causes the feminine to further question you.
If your entire sense of direction depends on your partner constantly reassuring you, you are asking her to carry something that belongs to you.
A man must ultimately be responsible for his own direction.
I am not saying to ignore your partner or refuse her wisdom.
I am saying to listen deeply to her, but decide from your calm center.
You can say something like, "Baby, I appreciate your concern. I've thought about this deeply, and I believe this is the direction I need to pursue."
You don't have to convince her or force her to agree, you simply need to stay grounded.
The Test Is Not Whether You Never Get Triggered
Let's be clear.
Being a grounded man does not mean you never get angry or frustrated.
There are going to o be times that you lose your patience and don’t know exactly how to respond.
You are human and you will get triggered.
The main question is what happens next.
How quickly do you recognize what is happening inside of you?
How capable are you to pause before reacting?
Can you take responsibility for your part and tell the truth about your emotions?
This is the work of emotional mastery or as Robert Masters calls “emotional intimacy.”
The point isn’t to become emotionless, but to be capable of experiencing emotion without being controlled by it.
Your Woman Does Not Need The Perfect Man
She does not need a man who is always right, dominating every situation, without every changing his mind.
She does not need a man who has all the answers and bulldozes everything that gets in his way.
What she needs is a man who is real, responsible, and connected to his higher self.
She wants a man who can admit when he’s wrong or say “I don’t know” when he doesn’t know.
She wants a man who knows what he wants but will listen to her perspective and make her feel seen and understood.
She wants a man who will hold his boundary and still love her deeply.
This is what masculine groundedness looks like.
Stop Trying to Pass Her Tests
The irony is that you cannot become grounded by obsessing over whether you are passing her tests.
If you are constantly asking yourself, "What does she want me to do?" or "Am I responding correctly?" or "Is she testing me right now?"
You are still organizing your life around her and letting your nice guy syndrome direct you.
The goal is not to become a man who performs masculinity in order to receive approval.
The goal is to become a man who knows who he is.
A man with direction, values, and boundaries.
A man who can listen, adapt, and be discerning. .
A man who can love deeply without abandoning himself.
Because the truest form of masculine strength is not controlling the world around you but remaining connected to yourself while the world around you moves.
Your woman will have emotions.
She will change, challenge you, doubt you, and get frustrated with you.
And sometimes, she will be right.
You might need to change or apologize and keep growing.
Grounded masculinity is not stubbornness or dominance.
It is the ability to remain present, honest, and connected to your truth while staying open to other points of view.
That is what creates trust and emotional safety in the feminine.
So the next time she complains...
Pause.
Take a breath.
And ask yourself, “What is happening inside of me right now?
Am I responding from my truth or reacting from fear?”
The real test is whether you can hold her emotion while staying true to yourself.
